Away Game 'Horror Stories'
|
No, not fighting on the terraces or in the opposition town centre, I am talking about travel nightmares. We have all had them, missing games, rail cancelled, stuck on motorways, no planes for the rare occassions we have been away in Europe.
What is YOUR worse experience? Luckily I have only had a few and not that bad as to effect missing the match (all of it anyway)
First one was Bolton away in the FA Cup - think we drew 0-0 and on the way back the old bill diverted us to Manchester and then we had to wait about 2 hours for a train, then we had signal failure, then there was a tarckside fire near London and we had to get off at Watford. The journey home including a taxi from Watford took around 8 hours.
The second one for me was Pompey away, Boxing Day I think. Coach broke down en route to Fratton Park and we had to wait in a layby for about 2 hours waiting for a replacement. Got to the ground about 20 mins after KO, queued about 10 mins to get in via one turnstile, then needed a piss in a small fucked up excuse for a toilet in the away end and ended up missing most of the game as we stayed at the bar.
You cunts?

Never missed a game because of transport that I can remember.
Had a shocker coming back from Bolton once and got stuck for hours at Stafford.
Thankfully Johnson nicked enough beer to keep me happy.

I drove to Bolton once, missed the turn off on the M1 and only realised something was amiss when I got into Sheffield.
Nothing a nice gentle drive through the pennines didn't sort out though.

WBA in the cup this year must be up there. Normally it is fairly painless to get to away games but that is the the only one I have missed due to transport.

Stoke away last year, 20 miles outside of Stoke mates Cambelt snapped, had to wait 2 hours for recovery truck and a further 5 hours tow home, lost 3-1 and we were shit by all accounts

Man United away
train broke down at Stoke
Nicked some blokes cab about 2, of course it had a Man United supporting driver with no idea how to get to Old Trafford
lots of shouting and 70 quid later we got there just after kick off to see Wanchope put us 1-0 up
7-1 it ended, only time I've ever wished I had stayed in Stoke

Car crash on the way to Boro last game of the sason when Roeder was in temporary charge was the only one where I've missed a game.
Haven't had too many train or coach issues that I can think of, though on the way to Cardiff for the PO semi the other year, the lad next to me threw up before we'd even left East Ham.
Over-officious policing has always been my bugbear when travelling

I once stayed up really late to watch a big boxing match even though we had Derby away the next day.
Overslept and missed the original train so got the next one half hour later, but every train after the original one was actually only going as far as Nottingham and I had to get 4 fucking buses from there to Derby, so instead of getting there at 10am for pub opening, I got there at 2.40.
A nice chap after the game also pulled a knife on me, so a cracking day out!

Few off here were on the train back from Birmingham I think when the driver kept stopping the train saying he'd throw us off if we sung I think.
As the next station approached we shut up, got a warning then started up again.
Helpful conductor told us the driver was Chelsea which kept us going even more.
Not a horror story just amusing.

Cardiff away in the playoff semis was a pain, drive to Cardiff, then back to services to pick up tickets from an ICE CREAM VAN and then back to Cardiff for some nose bag and drinks

Mine was this season funny enough. Palace at home (of all things).
Working hard on Saturday morning to get something finished, no overground trains so went by tube. It was a bit tight tight but I thought if I jog from Upton Park station I'll just catch kick off.
At Monument station I leg it to the front of the train so I don't get caught in the crowd at UP and surprisingly get a seat on what is usually a mobbed train. Look around, no West Ham supporters.
Get into Mile End- no West Ham supporters. West Ham, again no supporters. Unheard of at 2.45PM.
Get into Upton Park station and the Eastbound platform is absolutely mobbed with pissed-off West Ham. That's when I realised it was a 1.45PM kick-off.
Fought my way onto the Westbound platform and the weirdest thing was that I was the happiest person on the train as we'd been absolutely shit and beaten 1-3.
